The Teachable Leader
Doesn’t waste suffering
From the Faith-Driven Operating System Field Manual
Suffering will come. Pressure will come. Correction will come. Disappointment will come.
The question is not whether I will experience those things.
The question is whether I will remain teachable when they do.
“Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.” Hebrews 5:8, ESV
That verse stops me.
Jesus did not learn obedience because he had been disobedient. He learned obedience by entering fully into human life. He obeyed the Father under pressure, in weakness, through pain, and in suffering. (Lord, I pray I learn from all my suffering including that suffering caused by disobedience)
Learning is not beneath leadership. It is at the heart of faithful leadership.
Luke tells us that Jesus “increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52, ESV). His growth did not stop at age twelve. His earthly life continued to display dependence, submission, and obedience to the Father.
If Jesus grew through obedience and suffering, no leader is above learning.
The danger for leaders is not suffering. The danger is wasting suffering.
An unteachable leader becomes harder through difficulty. A teachable leader becomes wiser. An unteachable leader protects ego. A teachable leader receives formation. An unteachable leader asks, “Why is this happening to me?” A teachable leader asks, “Lord, what are you forming in me?”
Faith-driven leadership requires more than skill, vision, or drive. It requires a heart that stays soft before God.
To that end….
Lord, I pray for a soft heart. Lord you tell us that your heart was gentle and lonely. Lord help me with my obedience, help me to be teachable. I want to learn from my experiences, Lord, including my suffering. Help me not waste my struggles. Help me see what you are forming in me today.
In your name Jesus I pray,
Amen

A Faith-Driven Operating System is a consciously defined framework that governs how a person or business thinks, decides, acts, measures, corrects, and realigns their life under the authority of God. Search my Substack to read about having a Faith-Driven Operating System.
